Lesson 59: Matching Coins and Value

Lesson Objectives

  • Identify coins using concrete models and pictorial representations
  • Relate the coins to their values in cents (¢)
  • Read and write the names of coins
  • Match the names of coins to the coins themselves

Materials

  • Extend Workbook (Page 59)
  • Money set manipulatives or actual coins
  • Coin songs (optional)

Step 1: Warm Up (5 min)

Put students in paiars and have them discuss ways people get money and what they do with it. List some key ideas on the whiteboard in two columns. The first column, Get It, may include gifts, allowance, and work. The second column, Give It, may include saving, buying, and giving. Try to keep the lists general rather than include specific examples. Review them as a group. Use the lists for reference throughout the initial discussion. First, you must learn to recognize money. Money is currency issued by the government. All currencies use coins, bills, or both. The coins and bills are not the same in every country.

Step 2: Vocab Review (5 min)

Introduce new vocabulary: coins, pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, face of a coin.

Step 3: Model (5 min)

Tell students you are going to review the basics of money for our country – our four main coins (pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters). Use real money or money manipulative sets and show each coin to students. Tell them how much each coin is worth. Say 100 pennies equals $1, twenty nickels equals $1, ten dimes equals $1, and 4 quarters equals $1. Show them the front and back of each coin. Provide additional support with various coin songs.

Step 4: Guided Practice (5 min)

Within their pairs, have students practice quizzing each other on what each coin is called, and how much each coin is worth in cents. If necessary, give students a coin visual showing each coin, its name, and its worth for additional support for students to use.

Step 5: Student Practice (5 min)

Go to Student Workbook Page (59). Read the directions at the top of the page. Draw a line to match each coin face to the correct value. At the bottom of the page, have students write the correct value for each coin.

Step 6: Wrap Up (5 min)

To wrap up the lesson, review the learning objectives and core vocabulary words again and ask your students about their experience.
