Lesson 47: Extending Patterns

Lesson Objectives

  • Identify patterns with letters, items, and shapes
  • Finish patterns based on their sequence
  • Compose a pattern using relevant items

Materials

  • Extend Workbook (Page 47)
  • Different counters to help make patterns (shapes, colors, numbers, letters)
  • Index cards labeled: Is it a pattern? Yes? No? (sets for students)
  • Six total circle color patterns: 3 patterns, 3 non-patterns
  • Highlighters, markers, or crayons
  • Whiteboards and dry erase markers

Step 1: Warm Up (5 min)

Start off with simple pattern games. Ask students to line up girl, boy, girl boy. Ask them what pattern you just had them do (line up by girl, then boy). Then have them line up by lighter shirt, darker shirt color. Next, ask all students to stand up and ask every other student to sit down. Review different patterns done during warm-up.

Step 2: Vocab Review (5 min)

Introduce new vocabulary: patterns. Explain that they already know what patterns are in math. For example, when they skip count, that is a pattern with numbers. Explain that counting as well in itself is a simple pattern, as we are just increasing by one. Review AB, AABB, AAABBB, and ABC patterns (or infuse definitions in warm-up and modeling).

Step 3: Model (5 min)

Explain patterns can get more challenging and we see them with letters, items, and numbers. Write a pattern on the board and see if they can determine the pattern (1212121…?; YZYZYZYZY…?; Use shapes next: star, circle, star, circle, star…?). As you go through these patterns, explain that patterns follow rules and we can label the rules. If the students can identify the main pattern, they can determine the next that follows.

Step 4: Guided Practice (5 min)

Take out the “Is It a Pattern?” and “Yes” “No” cards. Ask students to place these at the top of their desks (work in groups or in pairs). Hand out 6 total circle pattern cards (create these prior to the lesson, e.g. yellow circle, green circle, yellow circle, green circle; yellow, red, green, yellow, red, green; non-examples: blue, green, yellow, blue circles; purple, yellow, orange, blue, red). Ask students to categorize based on whether or not they are patterns or not patterns. Ask them to explain their answers. Following that activity, create a pattern and draw it on the whiteboard. Ask students to copy their on a whiteboard or piece of paper. Have them circle the initial pattern (e.g. 141141414- circle the first 14; star, star, circle, circle, star, star – circle the star, star, circle, circle; happy, sad, mad faces, happy, sad, mad, happy – circle first happy, sad, mad faces).

Step 5: Student Practice (5 min)

Go to Student Workbook Page (47). Read the direction for each pattern set. Remind students to circle the inital pattern within the pattern (e.g. for the first pattern, circle the AB, as this lets them know the pattern). For the second pattern, they should: circle hat hat shirt shirt, and so forth. For the last pattern, ask students to come up with their own pattern, using any of the patterns done today (with letters, numbers, shapes, or items).

Step 6: Wrap Up (5 min)

To wrap up the lesson, review the learning objectives and core vocabulary words again and ask your students about their experience.
