Lesson 15: Sequencing Numbers 500–999

Lesson Objectives

  • Count within 1-999 from any number
  • Extend understanding of place value to 500-999
  • Represent place value with concrete and pictorial models
  • Show numbers 500-999 with base ten blocks
  • Relate place value form, expanded form, and standard number
  • Read & write number names for three-digit numbers
  • Use patterns (Touching/Counting Patterns) and sequences to master counting

Materials

  • Extend Workbook (Page 15)
  • Open number lines
  • Place value mat
  • Hundreds Chart
  • Base 10 Blocks
  • Three-digit number cards (if available)
  • Whiteboard with dry erase markers and erasers

Step 1: Warm Up (5 min)

Review sequences and patterns with your students and how students can “count on” or “back” from the starting number to find the pattern in a sequence of three numbers. number lines with your students.

Step 2: Vocab Review (5 min)

Review number lines, patterns, sequences, intervals within a number line, as well as hundreds with place value, flats/rods,units, and counting on or back. Explain that today they will identify numbers that come before, in between, or after a given number when counting in a sequence. Write three three-digit numbers on a white board (e.g. 410, 750, and 876). Ask your students to identify numbers that come after or next for each (411, 751. And 877). Then ask students to identify numbers that come before each one (409, 749, and 875. Now that you have three numbers in each sequnce, you can explain “in between” means between the first and last numbers of the sequence.

Step 3: Model (5 min)

Tell students that they will name the number by its location in the sequence. Play around with variations of three number patterns for numbers between 500-599 using manipulatives and open number lines. You can also practice previous lesson skills (greater than, less than, and place value concepts).

Step 4: Guided Practice (5 min)

Have students work in pairs or groups using white boards and open number lines. Give students three-digit numbers between 500-499 and have them write the number that comes before it, and the number that comes after it, or next. After doing that for a few numbers, give students two three-digit numbers and to figure out the number that comes in between those two numbers (e.g. 501 and 503, 490 and 492, 325 and 327). Students can also practice place value with three-digit numbers between 500-499 (staying within 10 to compare; 320 __ 330, 470__480). Let students work together with their place value mats to compare these numbers.

Step 5: Student Practice (5 min)

Go to Student Workbook Page (15). Using whiteboards or scratch paper, have students copy the first number sequence, starting with 501 and ask them to state the next number that comes after 501 (502). Remind them that 502 also comes before 503 which is next in the number sequence or pattern. Repeat this step for the next six number sequence problems.

Step 6: Wrap Up (5 min)

To wrap up the lesson, review the learning objectives and core vocabulary words again and ask your students about their experience.
