Science of Math 

The Science of Math is an initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of mathematics instruction through research-based strategies and resources. It focuses on understanding how students learn mathematics effectively, highlighting the importance of systematic methodologies in teaching to cater to diverse learning needs.

  

This initiative is essential in addressing the persistent achievement gaps seen in mathematics among various student groups, including economically disadvantaged students, students with disabilities, and English language learners. By implementing the Science of Math, educators can better support these groups, ultimately fostering an equitable educational landscape where every student has the chance to succeed in math.  

 

TouchMath is grounded in the Science of Math, which emphasizes evidence-based teaching methods to enhance student learning and achievement. By leveraging cognitive science principles, TouchMath ensures that mathematical concepts are presented in ways that align with how the brain processes and understands numerical information. TouchMath achieves this by: 

  • Using structured sequences, visual aids, and interactive elements the cater to various learning styles 
  • Fostering a growth mindset among students that focuses on deep conceptual understanding and reducing math anxiety 
  • Aligning curriculum with scientific findings on effective math instruction ensuring consistent, long-term results through ongoing research and continuous improvement 

Independently Validated 

The number of studies conducted on the efficacy of TouchMath demonstrates evidence of effectiveness across different settings—urban, suburban, and rural schools—and diverse student populations, including those with special needs. The program’s success spans multiple contexts, including U.S. and international schools from OECD countries such as Germany, India, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Turkey. According to research, the TouchMath program was effective for 97% of participants, making it an evidence-based practice for teaching math computation to students with or at-risk for disabilities. 

CRA Continuum 

The Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) continuum is a foundation of the TouchMath program, providing a structured pathway for students to grasp mathematical concepts. The CRA continuum ensures that learning progresses through three stages: concrete, where students use tangible objects; representational, where they draw or use visual aids; and abstract, where they work with symbols and numbers. This scaffolded approach: 

  • Solidifies understanding between different stages of learning 
  • Allow students to gain confidence and proficiency in math at their own pace 
  • Enables students to apply their knowledge to more complex mathematical problems effectively 

 

Universal Design for Learning 

TouchMath incorporates the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to create an inclusive math curriculum that accommodates the diverse needs of all students. TouchMath meets the needs of learners with disabilities while also enhancing the learning experience for all students, promoting equity and accessibility in math education. TouchMath achieves this by: 

  • Using multisensory strategies allowing every student access to interact with the content effectively 
  • Empowers teachers with flexible implementation plans 
  • Making customizable resources that cater to individual learning preferences and abilities
