Lesson 4: Quantities 0–4

Lesson Objectives

  • Review Touching/Counting Patterns for numbers 0-4, reiterate 0 has no TouchPoints.  
  • Recognize numerals 0-4 and count to 4 
  • Match numerals to sets of 0-4 objects and recognize dice numerals with numbers 
  • Associate quantities with Pictorial TouchPoints (TPPs), represent quantities with TouchPoints, and apply Touching/Counting Patterns 

Materials

  • Extend Workbook (Page 4) 
  • TouchMath’s Foam Numerals  
  • TouchMath’s Student Number Cards 
  • TouchMath’s TouchPoints with Pictures (TPP) and without pictures 
  • Plastic Bags (Quart or Gallon) for each student 
  • Objects or items of “0,” “1,” “2,” “3,” or “4” (e.g. counters, race cars, rocks, TouchPoints) 
  • Counters or objects for counting 
  • Dice 

Step 1: Warm Up (5 min)

Take out TouchMath’s Foam Numerals and TouchPoints with Pictures (TPP). Make plastic bags of TPP for each student to practice for numbers 1-4:  either preset and make for them, or let students pick their TPP (or pull out student plastic bags made from prior lessons). Practice using manipulatives of your choosing (TPP or other manipulatives) and practice sorting groups of 1-4 with manipulatives. Review TouchPoints and counting patterns on worksheet and with student cards. Can also sort 1-4 items by color as an extension (e.g. “two blue counters” “one red counter”) with the words zero, one, two at the top and manipulatives for each object underneath each. 

Step 2: Vocab Review (5 min)

Using the words “Zero,” “One,” “Two,” “Three,” and “Four,” place TouchMath’s Foam Numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 under its corresponding numeral. Place one small counter or object under the numeral 1 and two counters or objects under the numeral 2, three counters or objects under the numeral 3, and four counters or objects under the numeral 4. Show students dice and explain the dots represent quantities and numerals (e.g. 3 dots means numeral 3). 

Step 3: Model (5 min)

Take the TouchMath’s Foam Numeral 0 and place in front of your students with zero objects, the Foam Numeral 1 with 1 object, and the Foam Numeral 2 with 2 objects, the Foam Numeral 3 with 3 objects, the Foam Numeral 4 with 4 objects. Then, place TouchPoints on each Foam Numeral and count aloud as you place them on the Foam Numeral. Teach the counting patterns on the TouchPoints. 

Step 4: Guided Practice (5 min)

Give students TouchMath’s Foam Numerals and their own plastic bag of TouchPoints with Pictures. Have them take out the Foam Touch Numerals 0-4 and practice putting TouchPoints (with or without Pictures) on the Foam Numerals, counting as they place them on the Touch Numerals. Give students images or items of “1,” “2,” “3,” and “4” objects (e.g. 1 heart, 1 counter, picture of 1 cookie, 2 fish, 2 race cars, pictures of 2 dolphins) and place under the numeral 1, 2, 3, or 4 (match objects to numerals). Roll the dice with students and practice naming the number it represents 

Step 5: Student Practice (5 min)

Go to the Student Workbook Page (4). Have students count the dot patterns in each box in the left column and match the dot patterns with the numbers in column 2 and 3. Remind students that zero has no TouchPoints, so you never touch and count zero. If the box is empty, that means it is zero. If you have dice, place the dice face up on top of the three dots to show the 3 dots on the dice. Repeat this step for each box in the first column (with the 1 dot, 2 dots, and 4 dots), using the dice as mentioned previously, until every dot pattern has been matched with its corresponding two numbers (one in column two and one in column three).  

Step 6: Wrap Up (5 min)

Review lesson objectives, key vocabulary words, Touching/Counting Patterns, and dot patterns on a dice.
